Cenotaph: A Journey Through Mexican Death Metal
Founded by Óscar Clorio in late 1987 under the name Damned Cross, the band debuted with the demos Soldiers of Wotan (1988) and Excretion of Infected Corpses (1989). They later rebranded as Cenotaph following changes in style and lineup. In 1989, they independently released their first demo, Rise of Excruciation, a raw, dark death metal record that earned them recognition in the underground scene and quickly established them as a key influence.
In 1990, Cenotaph released the Tenebrous Apparitions EP through Distorted Harmony Records, limited to 1,000 copies. Its success led to a reissue by Baphomet Records in 1991, alongside their second EP, The Eternal Disgrace, showcasing a darker and more refined style.
In 1992, they featured in the compilation Pantalgia: An International Death Metal Compilation, alongside bands like Disembowelment, Cadaver, God Macabre, Pan-Thy-Monium, Crematory and Therion. That same year, they dropped their debut album, The Gloomy Reflection of Our Hidden Sorrows, which stood out for its extreme death metal sound and its departure from gore themes, cementing their status as genre pioneers.
In 1994, they released their second album, Riding Our Black Oceans, through the Netherlands- based Cyber Music label, showing a notable evolution in their sound. Their 1996 album Epic Rites delivered raw power, and the band relocated to Chicago, performing at the Milwaukee Death Metal Fest in 1998 and numerous local shows.
In 2000, they recorded their fourth album, Saga Belica, released in 2002 and produced in Berlin by Harris Johns (Kreator, Helloween). While the album showcased innovation, the band went on hiatus shortly after.
In 2017, they received an official recognition granted by the Government of the Republic for their contribution to Mexican metal. In 2018, they reunited, and in 2019, they performed at the Netherlands Death Fest and held a successful concert at Circo Volador in Mexico City, playing twice in the same night.
In 2020, they announced an Americas tour that was postponed due to the pandemic, although they managed shows in El Salvador and Guatemala before delays. They also welcomed Arturo Vargas as their new vocalist. Returning to the stage, they played festivals like México Metal Fest and Dragón Rojo, and embarked on a short tour through Colombia, Ecuador, Atlanta, Houston, and Mexico City, where they performed with Tribulation.
In 2024, they hit the stage at Chicago's Metal Threat Fest and played shows in California, including Los Angeles, Oakland, and San Francisco, with two dates at the California Deathfest. The band is currently working on a new album while gearing up for international festivals in 2025, such as the Maryland Deathfest, a special date with Finland's Convulse in Mexico, and their first-ever Asian tour, Tenebrous Apparitions Across Asia.
